This is a Vista newsgroup and most posts here deal with current releases of Vista and how to deal with various issues that users encounter.
Your views of Live Desktop are naive. It's a good tool for simple tasks using mobile tablet devices. It is not a replacement for a real PC and OS.
As a simple example, I do video work for a local church. We produce DVDs of church events for distrubution. The typical input source is perhaps 10-20 GB of data. That is edited and processed down to something that will fit on a 4.7 GB DVD. Sometimes video rendering may take 1-2 hours for a specific component that has to be resized/adjusted. there are many pieces to a DVD. A master DVD is produced and then a DVD tower is used for mass production.
These kind of tasks require real horsepower and processing capabilities. There are many many other similar examples.
Thin client approah can work well for a small set of simple tasks. Things like web browsing, email, and simple text editing. Of cousrse, simple palm devices can already do all this. Most prefer laptops as they are completely self contained, have full capabiliites and processing power and make it easy to transfer data back and forth to the desktop at home.
I believe there is a separate newsgroup for your topic. You might consider posting there.

What's REALLY NEEDED Is Windows Live DeskTop For The VAST Majority of Computer Users!
We Can Agree On This, RIGHT!

Sometimes the best reality check you can force upon yourself is to unplug your net connection and see how effectively you can still perform your day-to-day tasks.
I don't *want* something that becomes a paperweight if you happen to be in an area without a permanent, always-on broadband connection. There's still plenty I can do with Vista while offline, thank you very much.
I personally haven't gone broadband until earlier this year. Some days I miss having *that* security. :-p

Vista is the latest Windows and is targeted towards the average user. Whether they like it is another story, but that's the basic target.
Users need their own PC and OS, be it 98/2000/XP, or others.

This Is The Problem!
Over The Years, Most If Not All, The Things That, I Use My Computer For, Are NOW Available On The Net; OnLine, Web Based!
I Hardly EVER Use My Windows XP Operating System Except For Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) To Get To/Access My OnLine/Web Based Services.
Now, I Mostly Use My Windows XP Operating System For My Digital Pictures & The Occasional Notepad (Document)... But, I'm Now Able To UpLoad Directly From My Digital Camera To The Web & There's Plenty of Office-Like Web Based Applications ALREADY Available OnLine!?
I Have Programs That, Make Use of My Windows XP Operating System (e.g. Paint Shop Pro, Adobe, etc....) But, Most, If Not ALL of These Programs That, Have To Make Use My Windows XP Operating System, ARE AVAILABLE OnLine/Web Based, NOW!!!
Why Am I Required, To Have, What I Call,... "A Big Ol'HONKerous Operating System (Windows Vista)" Jus'To Get OnLine, Where MOST E=V=E=R=Y=T=H=I=N=G, I Do, Is ALREADY Located/Accessable???
....When A "Light-Weight" Operating System That, Simply, Effectively Boots To Web, Where ALL My OnLine/Web Based Services ARE ALREADY LOCATED, IS ALL I REALLY NEED???
This Is What I Hope That, Windows Live Is About!
The Windows Live DeskTop! (A Light-Weight, Operating System, DeskTop For OnLine/Web Access/Browsing ...Effectively, A OnLine/Web OS "Viewer" For Computer Users, Like Me!!!)
